Fighting and Preventing Crime is the Work of the Whole Community
Sharing equipment, knowledge, and expertise is even more critical during these very tight fiscal times. Partnerships with schools, civic organizations, and councils on aging, and human service agencies are necessary ingredients for success.
Understanding and addressing the unique safety concerns and law enforcement needs of 47 cities and towns in the Northwestern District takes time and commitment. I intend to give all the time and attention it takes to getting the work done to make our communities safer and stronger.
Cyber Crime
Cyber Crime is a major concern for parents, businesses, law enforcement, seniors, and general public. The Internet has become a focal point for many different types of crime. As the Internet becomes easier to use, the schemes to exploit innocent victims becomes more sophisticated and commonplace. It is estimated that Cyber Crime cost the U.S. economy $117 billion dollars last year, not to mention the human toll from the exploitation of women and children. It is imperative that the Office of the Northwestern District Attorney makes this a priority and collaborates with state and federal agencies to combat this growing threat to children, seniors and other citizens who fall prey to theft and exploitation.
As a result, I will create a Cyber Crime Unit team consisting of a specialized Assistant District Attorney, State Police investigators, and a civilian forensic specialist. This team will cooperate with federal authorities whenever necessary to track down and apprehend the cyber criminals who know no geographic boundaries.
This Cyber Crime Unit will focus on the investigation and prosecution of cases involving the use of computers to commit crimes or to store illegal evidence. Most particularly, we will target those criminals who target children, the elderly, and other vulnerable citizens.
The Northwestern District Attorney Community Outreach Program will make Cyber Crime a priority to educate the community on how to avoid becoming a victim of cyber crime and the negative consequences of cyber-bullying.
